Workshop 14
Foundation of affirmative hormone prescription and follow-up
This clinical session offers health-care providers a practical foundation in gender-affirming hormone therapy. Led by Dr Em Lane (she/they), the session will walk through the essentials of initiating and monitoring hormone therapy for trans and gender-diverse adult patients including assessment, common prescribing approaches, expected effects and timelines, and routine follow-up and lab monitoring. Grounded in a patient-centred, informed consent model of care and based on existing national and international guidelines, the session aims to help providers feel more confident and better equipped to support patients seeking hormone therapy, no matter their starting point.
Dr Em Lane is a family physician in their hometown of Fredericton whose clinical practice is focused on providing comprehensive mental health, sexual health, and gender-affirming care. They are an active member of the New Brunswick Trans Health Network and participate in various educational, advocacy, and health policy initiatives related to improving gender-affirming care access provincially. Em completed her Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, medical school at Dalhousie’s Saint John campus, and Family Medicine residency at Queen’s University in Kingston, ON.
